Craziness...

Lately I've been reading quite a bit about anonymous commenters leaving nasty notes behind on peoples blogs. I've been hearing about people harassing through e-mails. I'm going to tell you that I think it's nuts and I know it's hurtful.
A blog is a journal and if you are blessed enough to be let into someone's life...even on the small level that a blog allows, you should be supportive and allow yourself to be enriched by it. If you think someone's blog is boring...don't read it. If you think their children never do anything fun...then stop dropping by.
Unless a fellow blogger makes a commitment to you, they do not owe you anything. It is not their job or their goal to entertain you.
I have seen too many wonderful blogs that I was benefiting from having to go private or shut down altogether because someone decided that it was their right to become hurtful and go into attack mode. It isn't your right. A blog is a reflection of someone else's life...not yours. It is their forum to speak their own thoughts and share what pieces of their lives they choose.
No one should feel outside pressure to post or curb their thoughts or ideas to please someone else out here.
I have been very fortunate and haven't had to deal with this, but I will tell you that if someone decided to start leaving me snarky comments...I would hope they would have enough spine to at least leave their name. Anonymous is a pretty cowardly way to launch an attack.

These issues are why I have the Blogging Without Obligation graphic on my sidebar.

Very well said!! I so agree,it makes me so mad when I read such nasty comments left like that.
I can only guess that the person leaving them are so miserable inside that they too want others to feel that way.
I am also lucky to not have had this, and if I do I will just deleate the comment.
Have a great week.

I am in total agreement. If you don't want to be part of the community to love and support each other...then go somewhere else. I hate that dear sweet people have gotten so hurt by people. I wish we could put a stop to it and make this safe for us all.

I agree!
However,
I do suggest BEFORE going private two things:
DO NOT ALLOW ANOYMS. COMMENTS
&
MODERATE YOUR COMMENTS
If this doesn't work.. then by ALL means.. Go private!

Good for you for saying something!! And very well said.

We can't let ignorance stop us from sharing our lives with the ones that matter. I have made life long friends along this journey and am grateful for it everyday!!

I TOTALLY agree! I never have understood people that feel the need to spread their own misery through nasty comments.

Thanks for posting this Kimberley and have a great day!

I am so sad to lose my fellow blogers to the anonymous people who want to judge and hurt others. I have no idea especially why someone would want to hurt a 9 yr old as Lala was mentioning...

It is such a shame...It has never happen to me (as of yet?) but I have seen it on other blogs that I follow and it breaks my heart...how can someone be so mean...if you don't like what is being said...don't read it...it is that simple...

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never understand why someone has to leave a nasty comment. If you don't like it, DON'T READ IT!!!! That's my policy. It's cowardly, you're right.

I have been getting a lot of these comments lately. I delete them and move on, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bother me. Most of the ones I get are about our financial situation. Many, many people(or perhaps just the same person, repeatedly?) are concerned about how my husband and I are going to afford to go to China. Now I put a lot of personal stuff out on my blog, but this is something that us NOBODY'S BUSINESS! We have a plan, and I don't feel like I should have to explain it to everyone(especially people that won't even give me the courtesy of leaving their name with their comment). If you are afraid to write your name after something you wrote, then maybe you should really think about what it is you are saying.

You have put into words exactly what I've been thinking lately! I just don't understand why people feel they have the right to be so mean and hurtful.

Ditto! I also think that some people attack those whom they are jealous of. They usually have problems/issues in their lives and I personally feel sorry for them...what a sad life to go around criticizing others...ok, I am coming down off of my soap box now!!!

Well said Kimberly- I just don't understand people who do this, I guess it feeds into their own insecurity or inferiority complex, allowing them to "anonymously" feel like they are superior. Sad, really. Great post.

Colleen said...

Bravo bravo!!! It makes me nuts to see a nasty comment. I moderate all my comments because of the moron's out there. How sad that I have to moderate. : ( I know of a few blogs that have shut down due to nasty people. Why would anyone take the time to leave a nasty comment. Thank you for addressing this issue. : ) I love your blog!

Michelle said...

Amen!!! I just can't wrap my mind around someone who gets pleasure in knocking others down. I have been so blessed by the women I have met through blogging.

Gail said...

So well said Kimberley, it upsets me that unhappy, miserable people have to ruin it for others.

You nailed it seista.
Very well said.
It's not a nice feeling at all to have someone be so inconsiderate.

Your post hits SO close to my heart, as I was just a recipient of a very cruel "anonymous" commenter. I just recently lost my father unexpectedly. I posted my 9 year old sister's letter to my dad (per her request) and was blasted for it. It hurt. However, I WILL not go private. I've met too many wonderful friends. Thank you for your very thoughtful post!

Well said my friend....
I know it sounds like something our Mothers would tell us when we were growing up but I believe it comes down to they are just jelous! and of coarse... always anonomous!

Hello,
I so agree about this! My blog is pretty private because I haven't let people really know about it yet. If it ever came to the point of being harassed or telling me how to raise my kids I would be furious!

Thanks for voicing this.

I am sure it comes as no surprise that I totally agree. People respect you and I am glad you reminded everyone to be nice!

I just want you and everyone to know that I will come back and I will not let the unhappy person win. I just needed to put my family's feelings and safety first. Look around for me in September;)

Right on, sister. People must be really miserable to feel they can intrude into others' lives like that.

Hope you're having a great summer.

I will be out of town for the weekend, but would love to participate in Lucy's shower. I know just what to get. Could you send me her address? Thanks

That is one of the reasons that I try not too put anything to personal on my blog.

People are mean.

Amen Sister! People turn the channel when a show comes on that they don't like...why do people continue to read a blog they don't agree with and then leave a nasty comment in a cowardly way? Argh!
